U.S. conducts 'self-defense strikes' in Iran as Trump pushes for peace deal
The United States has conducted "self-defense" strikes in Iran, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). These actions occurred as President Trump indicated that negotiations for a peace deal with Iran were nearing completion.
The strikes and ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz impacted financial markets, with U.S. stock futures trimming earlier gains, Seeking Alpha reported.
President Trump has stated that a deal with Iran is "largely negotiated." He indicated that he would either sign "a great and meaningful" pact with Tehran "or there will be no deal," according to CBS News.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented on the situation, suggesting an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be announced as soon as Monday. On Tuesday, Rubio reiterated that the blockaded Strait of Hormuz would reopen "one way or the other." These remarks followed fresh U.S. strikes on Iran, which CBS News noted cast doubt on the prospect of an accord to end the Mideast conflict.
A senior Trump administration official indicated over the weekend that Iran had agreed in principle to dispose of highly-enriched uranium during negotiations with the U.S. Officials were reportedly still working through the specific details of the disposal mechanism.
The Trump administration has ruled out allowing Iran to impose tolls as part of any agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Secretary of State Rubio stated last week that "there is not a country in the world that should accept" such a system.
