Blue Origin to expand Florida campus with new $600 million facility
Blue Origin, the space company founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos, plans a $600 million expansion of its Rocket Park campus in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced the expansion on Friday, May 22.
The project, named "Project Horizon," represents a significant investment in the company's Florida operations. It aims to strengthen Blue Origin's rocket manufacturing and overall space operations in the state.
Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp stated that Project Horizon marks "the latest and most ambitious chapter in Blue Origin's decade-long commitment to Florida," according to a Reuters report published by AOL.
The expansion will receive support through the Spaceport Improvement Program. This program is a collaborative effort between Space Florida and the Florida Department of Transportation. The Spaceport Improvement Program has previously provided funding for Blue Origin's new launch pad at Launch Complex 36.
Blue Origin currently holds a unique position in Florida's space industry. It is the only company that both manufactures and launches rockets from the state, Reuters reported.
The expansion comes as Blue Origin continues its development and launch activities. In April, federal aviation regulators issued an order for Blue Origin to investigate an upper-stage malfunction. This incident occurred during a failed satellite launch of its New Glenn rocket from Florida, according to AOL.
The $600 million investment signals a continued push in the commercial space sector. One source described the expansion as part of a "new rocket race," highlighting the growing competition and development in the industry.
