Internal document shows Meta's plans for May 20 layoffs, restructuring

Meta Platforms (META.O) is preparing to implement layoffs affecting 10% of its global workforce this week, alongside a significant restructuring aimed at enhancing its artificial intelligence capabilities. The plans were detailed in an internal document seen by Reuters on Monday, May 18.

The layoffs are scheduled to occur in three batches globally on Wednesday, with notifications to affected employees going out at 4 a.m. local time. This move is part of a broader overhaul at the social media giant.

According to the internal memo, Meta's Chief People Officer, Janelle Gale, informed employees that "many leaders will announce org changes" in coordination with the workforce reductions. These changes are designed to improve the company's AI workflows.

As part of the restructuring, Meta intends to reassign approximately 7,000 employees to new initiatives focused on AI workflows. The company also plans to eliminate certain managerial roles.

The combined impact of the layoffs and the internal transfers is expected to affect about 20% of Meta's total workforce. This initiative aligns with Meta's strategy to increase its investments in artificial intelligence throughout the year. The company aims to integrate AI agents into both its product offerings and its internal operational approach.
